Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Understanding Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

What you should know

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the protective myelin sheath covering nerve fibers, disrupting communication between the brain and body. MS can cause a wide range of symptoms — vision problems, muscle weakness, coordination difficulties, numbness, fatigue, and cognitive changes — that vary enormously from person to person.

MS is typically diagnosed between ages 20 and 50, meaning patients face decades of disease management. The course is unpredictable: some patients have relapsing-remitting MS with distinct flares and recoveries, while others experience steadily progressive disability.

Home health care for MS addresses both acute needs (managing relapses, infusion therapy) and ongoing maintenance (physical therapy to maintain mobility, occupational therapy for daily living adaptations, speech therapy for swallowing or communication difficulties). Our team helps patients maximize function and independence at every stage of the disease.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) — Common Questions

Yes. During a relapse, we can administer IV corticosteroids at home, provide intensive therapy to address new deficits, and help you manage increased fatigue and disability. Our goal is to support maximum recovery from each relapse.

We administer several MS biologic infusions at home for qualifying patients. After your initial infusions are tolerated at an infusion center, subsequent doses can often be given at home with our trained infusion nurses monitoring throughout.
